Pelecanus occidentalis
A broad-winged silhouette, an enormous bill, and a sudden dive. Meet one of the coast’s most recognizable neighbors.
Coastal resident; numbers and movements vary with season and food availability.
Look for a heavy brown body, broad wings, and a long bill with a throat pouch. Head and neck colors change with age and breeding condition; use the whole bird, not color alone.
Brown pelicans plunge into the sea for fish. The Channel Islands provide important nesting and resting habitat—a reminder that the birds along our shore belong to a much larger coastal system.
Harbors, beaches, and coastal waters are useful observation settings. Try watching from an established waterfront path; sightings are never guaranteed. Keep clear of resting birds and never approach nesting colonies.
Identification note: A distant silhouette is not always enough for identification. Notice the bill, body shape, and feeding behavior together.
